Wix is the most widely advertised website builder in Germany. Its television commercials, aggressive Google Ads campaigns, and €0 entry price make it the first option many small business owners encounter. But for German businesses, the question is not whether Wix is easy to use — it is whether Wix is legally and commercially appropriate for the German market. The answer, in most cases, is that it is not.
Wix is a US-based company. Its infrastructure processes and stores European user data on servers that fall under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, which permits US law enforcement access to data on US-company servers regardless of where those servers are physically located.
The Schrems II ruling (CJEU, 2020) invalidated the previous EU-US Privacy Shield framework. While the EU-US Data Privacy Framework has since been adopted, German data protection authorities — particularly the Bayerisches Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht (BayLDA) and Hamburg's DPA — have issued guidance that use of US-based analytics and infrastructure requires explicit, informed consent and a complete Datenschutzerklärung disclosing the US data transfer and its legal basis.
Wix sites load tracking pixels and US-hosted scripts by default. Many Wix users are not aware that these fire before any cookie consent is given, creating a DSGVO violation from the first page load. Wix does offer a cookie consent banner tool, but its default configuration does not meet the Planet49 standard required by German courts — which mandates that no non-essential data processing occurs before an active opt-in.
Wix allows you to create any page you want, including an Impressum page. In that narrow sense, it "supports" an Impressum. However, Wix provides no legal template, no §5 TMG field structure, and no validation that your Impressum is complete. You are on your own.
More significantly, Wix's page editor does not force the Impressum link into the footer of every page by default — a requirement under German web law. Users who build Wix sites without legal knowledge frequently miss this, making them immediately Abmahnung-eligible.
German mobile users are on a mix of LTE and 5G networks, but German regulators and Google both emphasise mobile performance. Wix mobile PageSpeed scores consistently range from 40 to 65 on independent audits due to heavy JavaScript bundles, large render-blocking resources, and Wix's multi-layer rendering architecture.
Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — are ranking factors in Google's algorithm. A custom React website built with modern performance practices achieves 95+ consistently. The gap is not cosmetic; it directly affects where you appear in Google.de results.
After three years, Wix has cost more, delivered a site with DSGVO exposure, produced lower Google rankings due to PageSpeed, and left you with no asset — you own nothing. Wix shuts down, your website disappears. With a custom-built website, you own the code. You can host it anywhere. It does not expire.
German consumers identify template sites immediately. Studies on German e-commerce behaviour consistently find that site credibility — professional appearance, fast load, clear legal information — is the primary driver of initial trust. A generic Wix template shared by thousands of businesses globally does not project the individuality and credibility that German B2B and B2C buyers expect before making contact.
